Green Gift Monday Returns

Black Friday certainly invokes a different response to the green consumer.

Rather than seeing it as the favorite day of the holiday season, eco advocates are more likely to see it as a race to the bottom consumerism-fest with cheap prices on even cheaper gifts.

How ever you feel about the biggest shopping day of the year is fine with me. You know there’s no judgment here. Even when I hop on my soapbox about ethical gift giving, it doesn’t mean a “made in China” gift won’t wind up somewhere under our tree. It just means we’re all doing our best to give meaningful gifts that leave a lasting impact on our recipient – NOT a negative impact on the planet.

And if you shop-it-up on Black Friday, it doesn’t mean you can’t also celebrate another popular shopping day after your weekend wrapping frenzy. You can turn your Cyber Monday into Green Gift Monday.

What is Green Gift Monday?

On November 28 and throughout the holiday season, The Nature Conservancy is encouraging consumers to purchase responsible, meaningful gifts as part of their second annual Green Gift Monday campaign.

Green Marketing for Small Businesses

First things first – let’s talk mindset.

In my experience working almost exclusively with Green businesses over the past two years, I’ve gathered a small arsenal of observations about state of mind and how it affects your marketing message.

Many small businesses and companies new to the Green sector tend to fall under one of these attitudes:

Green Mindset #1 – “We’re passionate about the environment and committed to making a difference in the world.” These are the business founders or marketing managers who want to spread the word about their Green solutions.

They’re excited, they’re helpful, and they’re hopeful. What they may lack in experience, they MORE than make up for with enthusiasm.

And then there’s –

Green Mindset #2 – They’re in it because Green is where the money is right now. They’re “happy to help the earth and all,” but making money is several rungs higher on the ladder of importance. They are scientific in their approach – often applying the same business formula that has worked previously for them to now turn green to gold.

Before it sounds like I’m judging attitude #2, I’ll clarify that I think it’s smart

…

Now that “Green” is everywhere, does your message cut through the online clutter?

Green consumers are savvy. And they have a wealth of information available to them online. Most importantly — the bulk of them are women. And they command as much as 80% of household purchasing power.
